Bakker, Lund, and Metli take Night two wins at Nationals
By: Tom Svoboda/Jackson Speedway

Jackson Minnesota (August 17, 2007) - The second night of the 29th Annual Kemna-Asa Auto Plaza Jackson Nationals saw nothing but Sprint Cars.  Svoboda Excavating of Jackson sponsored the sprint car spectacular, which saw three classes of sprint cars on the speedway.  Picking up the IMCA Sprint Nationals Championship was Curt Lund, Redwood Falls MN.  Winning the Pizza Ranch Limited Sprint car qualifying feature was Jeff Metli, Mason City IA.  Gregg Bakker, Sioux Falls SD, was decalared the winner of the ASCS feature after race winner Chuck Swenson, Watertown SD, refused to have his motor inspected.

The 25-lap ASCS Sprint car feature race started out with a six car pile-up on the front straightaway which involved Casey Heser, Jackson MN, Mike Sitzman, Jr., Tappen ND, Lee Grosz, Harwood ND, Bill Boles, Harris IA, Chris Graf, Glencoe MN, and Curt Lund, Redwood Falls MN.  Graf was taken to the hospital for tests but was conscious and talking to medical personal.  Heser and Sitzman were also done, while Boles, Grosz, and Lund were able to restart the race.  On the restart it was Chuck Swenson, getting the early lead from his pole starting position with Scott Winters, Butterfield MN, getting the second spot, and Shane Stewart, Indianapolis IN, getting the third spot.  On lap two Stewart would get by Winters for the second spot.  While working on lap three Stewart would spin in turn two, do a 360, and keep going, however he would loose several positions.  As the race went on Swenson would start to pull away from the field as Winters ran second and Dave Glennon, Casselton ND, ran third.  At the halfway point in the race fourth place running Gregg Bakker, Sioux Falls SD, would catch Glennon and move into the third spot on lap thirteen.  When the race reached the two thirds mark, Winters had caught Swenson and attempted to make the pass, but Swenson kept him behind.  With Winters still on Swenson’s back door Bakker, would catch up to the leaders and on the twenty second lap Bakker would move around Winters and take over second.  On the white flag lap Bakker got high in turns one and two which allowed Winters to just about pass him but Bakker was able to maintain the position.  As the checkered flag was displayed to the field Chuck Swenson crossed the finish line by a half a car length over Gregg Bakker.  Bakker took second, followed by Scott Winters, Dave Glennon, Brian Brown, Grain Valley MO, Shane Stewart, Chad Meyer, Sioux Falls SD, Jesse Drost, Rushmore MN, Clint Garner, Sioux Falls SD, and Natalie Sather, Fargo ND.  In post race inspection, Chuck Swenson’s motor was found to be questionable.  ASCS officials impounded Swenson’s motor and will be tearing the motor down Saturday morning.  The B feature was won by Gordy Vogelaar, Worthington MN, with the Dash going to Chuck Swenson.  Heat races were won by Chad Meyer, Shane Stewart, Gregg Bakker, and Scott Winters.  The top four finishers of the A Feature, once an official finish is determined, will be locked into the pole dash for Saturday’s $5000 to win Jackson Nationals Championship.

It was all Curt Lund in the 20-lap Jackpot Junction IMCA Sprint Car feature race.  At the drop of the green it was Curt Lund getting the early lead from his outside row one starting spot.  Shannon Eriksen, Lakeville MN, would get the second spot with Jesse Smith, Mankato MN, the third spot.  On lap one the caution came out when Dan Menk, Franklin MN, spun in turn two.  On the restart Lund kept the field behind, as Eriksen ran second and Jason Tostenson, Gaylord MN, moved into third.  Lap three saw the next caution flag when the hood came up on the car of Bill Johnson, St. Peter MN.  Johnson would come to the work area and get the hood refastened and return to the race.  On the restart Tostenson would get by Eriksen and moved into second. On lap six the red flag came out for Bill Johnson who got into the wall in turns three and four and flipped several times.  Johnson was ok but done for the night.  On the restart Lund would again keep the field behind as Tostenson ran second followed by Smith.  On lap eleven, third place running Jesse Smith, brought out the caution when he spun in turn two.  Again Lund kept the field behind, as Donovan Peterson, Brookings SD, took over second when Smith spun.  Curt Lund would lead the remaining laps unchallenged and go on to pick up the IMCA Sprint Car Nationals Championship.  Donovan Peterson took second.  Jason Tostenson crossed the line in third, but did not make weight and was disqualified.  That moved the field up and gave third to Neal Stevens, Bingham Lake MN, followed by Shannon Eriksen, and Jennifer Eriksen, Burnsville MN.  Heat races were won by Troy Manteufel, Dan Grams, Gaylord MN, and Curt Lund.

Several caution flags slowed action in the 20-lap Pizza Ranch Limited Sprint car feature race. At the start it was Marty Stephenson, Mitchellville IA, getting the early lead.  Casey Friedrichsen, Arthur IA, grabbed the second spot with Ryan Voss, Okoboji IA, the third spot.  Two cautions in the first two laps kept the field bunched up as Stephenson stayed up front.  On the first of the two restarts, Voss was able to get by Friedrichsen for the second spot.  Two more cautions on laps four and five, still saw Stephenson keep the lead as Voss ran second and Friedrichsen third.  On lap eight Metli challenged Voss for the second spot and on the next lap Metli would attempt to take the lead from Stephenson but he was able to keep Metli behind.  On lap twelve another caution came out when Shadrach Sporaa, Boone IA, spun in two.  Because of the number of cautions, the red flag was thrown for a fuel stop.  On the restart Stephenson again kept the field behind, but on lap thirteen Metli was able to work his way around Stephenson and get the lead.  Metli would then pull away from the field and go on to take the qualifying feature race win.  Marty Stephenson took second followed by Ryan Voss in third.  Nick Clifford, Omaha NE, crossed the line in fourth but did not make weight and was disqualified.  Casey Friedrichsen was credited with fourth with Bob Hildreth, Iowa Falls IA, fifth.  Heat races went to Bruce Anderson, Trimont MN, Marty Stephenson, and Matthew Stelzer, Omaha NE.

Weather permitting the Nationals wrap up tonight for Erickson Trucks and Parts Championship Night for the ASCS Sprints, Pizza Ranch Limited Sprints, Performance Center Stock Cars and Hobby Stocks.  Hot laps at 7:00 p.m. with racing to follow.
