Nygaard, Hodgins, Masters, Odegaard, and Strandberg take Jackson
Wins

Jackson Minnesota (August 2, 2008) – A few late afternoon showers didn’t dampen the racing spirits this past Saturday night at the Jackson Speedway. It was Hall of Fame night at the track which saw five individuals inducted into the Hall of Fame in a special ceremony held in the afternoon before the racing program. Those inducted included Keith Frantsen and Jerry Frantsen of Windom, Joe Wieskus of Jackson, the late Jim Miller and the late Ivan Tokle. The family of the late Wilmer Lundt, the speedway’s first track champion, also put an extra $250 in the sprint purse and the Sprint feature winners name will also be going on a special plaque in the Hall of Fame.
Winning the nights feature races were Wade Nygaard, Fargo ND, Andy’s Tree Service 360 Sprints; Mark Hodgins, Spencer IA, Double Barrel Sprints; Jake Masters, Graettinger IA, Performance Center IMCA Stock Cars; Ken Odegaard, Welcome MN, B Modifieds; and Dan Strandberg, Worthington MN, Yellow Book Hobby Stocks.
Three different drivers led in the 20-lap Wilmer Lundt Memorial Sprint Car feature race. At the start it was pole sitter Joe Riedel, Sioux Falls SD, getting the early lead from his pole starting spot. Mark Toews, Spirit Lake IA, would get the second spot, with Jerry Richert, Jr., Forest Lake MN, getting the third spot. As the leaders raced into turns one and two while working on the second lap Toews and Riedel would make contact, causing Riedel to get a flat tire, which forced him to the pit area. Toews would also suffer some damage but was able to keep going. No caution was thrown, but that handed the lead over to Jerry Richert, Jr., as Dave Becker, Belle Plaine MN, raced in second and Brandon Geldner, St. Peter MN, raced in third. On lap three Jesse Drost, Rushmore MN, pulled alongside Geldner and the two raced side by side. On the fourth lap Drost was able to complete the pass. While the field was working on the seventh lap the red flag came out when second place running Dave Becker got too high in turns three and four making hard contact with the wall. Becker was ok but done for the night. For the restart, Richert had the lead followed by Drost, and Wade Nygaard. At the drop of the green Nygaard got a good restart and was able to get by Drost and Richert and take the lead as the field raced into turn three. Just past the half way point in the race, Drost was able to get by Richert for second. Nygaard would then build up a comfortable lead on the field, as Drost ran second and Richert third. As the raced continued on Drost would start to reel in Nygaard, but was never a threat to pass him. Wade Nygaard would go on to take the win; he was followed Jesse Drost, Jerry Richet, Jr., Jody Rosenboom, Rock Rapids IA, and Gordy Vogelaar, Worthington MN. Heat races went to Joe Riedel, Mark Toews, Spirit Lake IA, and Jody Rosenboom.
Only one caution flag slowed Mark Hodgins on the way to victory lane in the 15-lap Double Barrel Sprint Car feature race. At the start of the race it was Hodgins getting the lead from his pole starting spot. Jake Nicosen, Ringsted IA, would get the second spot with Nate Eakin, Milford IA, getting the third spot. The battle for the lead heated up on lap two when Eakin and Nicosen were knocking on Hodgins back door. Hodgins would hold them off though. The next lap saw Bruce Anderson, Trimont MN, get by Nicosen, moving him back to fourth. The leaders would now race several laps with Hodgins up front followed by Eakin and Anderson. On lap twelve Anderson would attempt to get by Eakin but was unsuccessful. On lap thirteen the races only caution came out when Brad Anderson, Marathon IA, spun his car in turns three and four. That set up a lap dash, and it was Mark Hodgins holding off the field and going on to take the win. He was followed by Nate Eakin, Bruce Anderson, Frank Phipps, Everly IA, and Mike Blomstrom, Ft. Dodge IA. The heat races were won by Bruce Anderson and Frank Phipps.
Several early race cautions slowed the action in the 15-lap Stock Car feature race. It was Jake Masters getting the early lead from his pole starting spot, as Derek Voehl, Lakefield MN, got the second spot and Justin Luinenberg, the third position. Two laps would get in when four caution flags would be thrown in the next three laps. Through the several restarts, Masters was able to keep the field behind him as Trent Schroeder, Worthington MN, would race in second and Jeffrey Larson third on lap five. As the leaders raced in a tight pack, Schroeder attempted to make a pass for the lead on lap nine but was unsuccessful. As the race wound down it was Jake Masters maintaining the lead to the end and picking up his first Jackson Speedway feature race win of the season. He was followed by Trent Schroeder, Jason Mickelson, Strom Lake IA, Jeffrey Larson, Rushmore MN, and Jeff Senne, Fairmont MN. Heat races went to Jake Masters and Jeff Senne.
The 12-lap B Modified feature saw three different leaders and the second place finisher take home the first place money. It was Tom Brown, Heron Lake MN, getting the early lead on in the race as Justin DeBoer, Fairmont MN, got the second spot and Kyle Steuber, Fairmont MN, the third spot. On lap two Steuber would get by Justin DeBoer for second while Ken Odegaard would work his way into third. On the next lap Odegaard continued his forward momentum as he moved into second and then got the lead on lap four in turns three and four. Two laps later Troy Gochanour, Armstrong IA, who had been working his way up through the field moved into the lead putting Odegaard back to second. The leaders raced in the order for several laps, when the battle for third heated up among Kyle Steuber and Justin Schuder, Fairmont MN. When the checkered flag it was Troy Gochanour crossing the finish line first. However his car did not pass post race tech and therefore he was disqualified. That gave the win to second place finisher Ken Odegaard and moved the finishing order up one spot. Kyle Steuber was credited with second followed by Justin Schuder, Devin Spoo, Estherville IA, and Eric Kinnetz, Spirit Lake IA. Heat races were won by Troy Gochanour and Kyle Steuber.
Two different drivers led in the 12-lap Hobby Stock feature race. At the start it was Chris Harris, Graettinger IA, getting the lead, as Chad Taylor, Fairmont MN, grabbed the second spot and John Briggs, Calumet IA, the third spot. On lap three Dan Strandberg would move into third. The races only caution flag would come out on lap three when Sami Jo Helmers, Dunnell MN, and Colton Knudson, Westbrook MN, got together in turn two. On the restart Harris held off the field, but two laps later was unable to hold off Strandberg, as he got by him coming out of turn two. Strandberg would now be pursued by Dan Thate, Fairmont MN, and Chad Carlson, Ormsby MN, who ran third. The leaders would race in that order until the end, and when the checkered flag flew it was Dan Strandberg taking the win followed by Dan Thate, Chad Carlson, John Briggs, and Chad Taylor. Heat races went to John Briggs and Dan Strandberg.
