Tostenson, and Friedrichsen take night two wins at Jackson Nationals
By: Tom Svoboda/Jackson Speedway
Jackson Minnesota (August 15, 2008) – Partly cloudy skies and comfortable temperatures greeted race teams and fans for night two of the 30th Annual Kemna-Asa Auto Plaza Jackson Nationals presented by Svoboda Excavating. Winning the Jackson Speedway Touring Series preliminary feature race was Wayne Johnson, Knoxville IA. Winning the Jackpot Junction IMCA Sprint Car Nationals Title was Jason Tostenson, Gaylord MN, and picking up the 305 Sprint Car nationals win was Casey Friedrichsen, Arthur IA.
Three different drivers led in the 25-lap JSTS 360 Sprint feature. At the start several cars were involved in a crash in turns three and four, a total of eight cars were involved, four of which were able to restart the race, all drivers were able to walk away. On the complete restart it was Gregg Bakker, Sioux Falls SD, getting the early lead while Billy Alley, Lincoln NE would get the second spot with Brad Barickman, Richfield MN, getting the third position. The leaders raced in this order for the first two laps when the races first caution came for Lee Grosz, Harwood ND, who spun in turns one and two. On the restart, Bakker was able to keep Alley behind him but moving up fast through the field was Wayne Johnson, who started in the 18th starting position. Johnson was up to the third spot by the fourth lap, when the caution came out for two cars, Chad Meyer, Sioux Falls SD, who stopped on the front straightaway and Jake Leighty, Worthington MN, who spun in turns one and two. On the restart, Bakker held the field off but only was able to do so for one lap as Billy Alley made his move into the lead on lap five. Alley would then take off from the field a bit as Bakker raced in second and Wayne Johnson in third. The races next caution came out on lap eleven when Shawn Van Wyhe, Rock Rapids IA, came to a stop on the back straightaway. On the restart, Alley kept the field behind him as Bakker raced in second and Johnson third. While working on lap fourteen Bakker would get too high in turn two which would allow Johnson and Jake Peters, Sioux Falls SD, to get by him. Five laps later Peters would get by Alley for the second spot. When the checkered flag flew it was Wayne Johnson taking the win followed by Jake Peters, Billy Alley, Gregg Bakker, and Travis Whitney, Minneapolis MN. The B Features were won by Clint Garner and Wayne Johnson with the heat races going to Russell Wiese, Billy Alley, Jesse Drost, Rushmore MN, and Chad Meyer.
Two drivers led in the 20-lap IMCA Sprint Car feature race. At the start it was Curt Lund, Redwood Falls MN, getting the early lead as Jason Tostenson would get the second spot. At the end of lap one the red flag came out when several cars got together in turn two, all the drivers were ok but the cars were all done for night. On the restart, Lund held the field off and then started to pull away from second place Jason Tostenson. With several laps being run under green, Lund would show the field around the track as he was up front and continuing to pull away. On lap fifteen the caution came out when Jay Rickert, Glencoe MN, spun in turn two. On the restart, Lund kept Tostenson behind him but, two laps later Lund had mechanical problems and took his car to the pit area handing the lead over to Tostenson. Jason Tostenson would lead the remaining three laps and go on to pick up the win. Shannon Eriksen, Lakeville MN, was second followed by Keith Beckler, Litchfield MN, Donovan Peterson, Watertown SD, and Jennifer Eriksen, Lakeville MN. Heat races went to Donovan Peterson, Mike Sargent, Cleveland MN, and Jason Tostenson.
The 15-lap 305 Sprint car feature race was slowed several times. At the start, Casey Friedrichsen got the early lead from his outside row two starting spot. He would hold off a hard charging field through several early race cautions. With Friedrichsen up front, Wayne Redmond, Ft. Dodge IA, would race in second with Steve Yarns, Jackson MN, in third. On lap five the leaders would shift some positions, as Tasker Phillips, Pleasantville IA, would move into the second spot getting by Redmond, while Yarns would fall back in the field. By lap six Ryan Voss, Okoboji IA, who started at the rear of the field had moved into third. Casey Friedrichsen would be slowed a couple more times by more yellow flags but held off the field, and went on to take the win. Tasker Phillips would cross the line in second but came in too light at the scales and was disqualified. That moved the finishing order up one spot and gave second to Nate Eakin, Milford IA, followed by Ryan Voss, Bruce Anderson, Trimont MN, and Wayne Redmond. Heat races were won by Casey Friedrichsen and Jake Nicosen, Ringsted IA.
The 30th Annual Kemna-Asa Auto Plaza Jackson Nationals wraps-up tonight with championship races for the JSTS Sprints, Stock Cars, Hobby Stocks and B Mods, plus there will be a full show for the Double Barrel sprint cars. Hot laps tonight at 7:00 p.m. with racing to follow.
