Jackson Minnesota (August 15, 2009) – On a rather warm and muggy night a good field of cars checked in at the ASA Sanctioned Jackson Speedway for the final tune-up for the 31st Annual Jackson Nationals. Winning the nights feature races on Loosbrock Digging Services of Lismore MN and Bridget’s Bucksnorts Brew Ha Ha and Grill of Jackson MN race night were Ken Tietz, Belle Plaine MN winning the Dominick Bruns Memorial race for the Performance Center IMCA Stock Cars.  Jake Peters, Sioux Falls SD, won the US Army Sprint car feature.  Frank Phipps, Everly IA, was the Napa of Windom 305 sprint car feature race winner with Greg Sidles, Emmetsburg IA, winning the Bohls Small Engine and Marine Repair B Modifieds; Shane Klaassen, Little Rock IA, winning the Loosbrock Digging Service Hobby Stocks; and Roger Nielsen, Estherville IA, winning the Yellowbook Hornet feature race.

In the 25-lap Dominick Bruns Memorial IMCA Stock Car feature it was all Ken Tietz from start to finish.  At the drop of the green flag Tietz was able to get the early lead from his outside pole starting spot.  Stefan Sybesma, Sanborn IA, would get the second spot with Jack Byers, Hartley IA, getting the third position.  The leaders would race in this order for the first six laps when the races first caution came out when a big five car pile-up occurred coming out of turn two.  Several cars sustained severe damage and had to be towed to the pits but all drivers were ok. On the restart, Tietz was able to maintain his number one spot with Sybesma in second and Byers in third.  The leaders would race in a tight pack through the first half of the race.  On lap eighteen, Jeffrey Larson, Lakefield MN, moved his way up through the field and worked his way into second getting around Sybesma.  On lap 23 the yellow came out for Sybesma who had something let go on his car forcing him to stop on the back stretch.  That set up a two lap dash and on the restart, Larson would challenge Tietz for the lead while Jack Byers and Jerry Coopman, Mankato MN, battled it out for third.  When the checkered flag flew it was Ken Tietz taking the win followed by Jeffrey Larson, Jerry Coopman, Rick Mees, Mankato MN, and Jack Byers.  The B Feature was won by Troy Woelber, Hull IA, with heat races going to Jake Masters, Jeffrey Larson, Jerry Coopman, and Trent Schroeder, Worthington MN.

Several cautions slowed the action in the 20-lap Sprint car feature race. At the start it was Jake Peters, getting the early lead from his pole starting spot.  Bill Boles, Harris IA, would get the second spot with Joe Riedel, Ramona SD, getting the third position.  On lap two the caution came out for Boles who stopped on the back straightaway.  One more lap would get in when Adrian Wagner, Hermantown MN, got into the wall in turn three.  Peters would hold the field off through one more restart, but second place running Joe Riedel could not hold off Gregg Bakker, Sioux Falls SD.  Bakker was able to get by him on lap six only to lose the spot two laps later in turn two when he got too high.  Another caution came out on lap nine when Derek Anderson, Estherville IA, spun in turn two.  On the restart again Peters pulled away from the field but Bakker would get second back once again from Riedel.  Two more cautions would slow the pace on this race but not Jake Peters; he would go on to pick up the win.  Gregg Bakker was second followed by Mark Toews, Spirit Lake IA, Joe Riedel, and Shawn Van Wyhe, Rock Rapids IA.  Heat race wins went to Adrian Wagner and Jake Peters.

The 12-lap 305 Sprint car feature race saw Frank Phipps lead the entire event start to finish caution free and take the win.  Second went to Russell Wiese, Lake Park IA, followed by Mike Blomstrom, Ft. Dodge IA, Bruce Anderson, Trimont MN, and Jake Nicosen, Ringsted IA.  The heat race was won by Frank Phipps.

The 12-lap B Modified feature event went green-white-checkered.  At the start it was Greg Sidles getting the early lead with Tyler, Johnson, Tea SD, getting the second spot and Matthew Looft, Swea City IA getting the third spot.  On lap two Tracy Johnson, Lake Preston SD, got around Looft for third.  The leaders raced in that order for several laps when Dan Paplow, Dundee MN, challenged Tracy Johnson for the third spot.  Johnson however was able to hold him off.  As the race began to wind down Tracy Johnson began to challenge brother Tyler for the second spot but Tyler was able to hold him off.  When the checkered flag flew it was Greg Sidles taking the win followed by Tyler Johnson, Tracy Johnson, Josh Ruby, Lakota IA, and Dan Paplow.  Heat races were won by Ray Bertrand, Wilmont MN, and Oliver Kollofski, Fairmont MN.

Two different drivers led in the 12-lap Hobby Stock feature race, which was slowed several times by the yellow flag.  At the start it was Dustin Larson, Rushmore MN getting the early lead.  He would lead through the first four laps, surviving three restarts, when his cars went up in smoke.  That handed the lead over to Shane Klaassen, who had to go to work at holding off Jason Andrews, Okabena MN.  As the race entered its final laps Dan Strandberg, Worthington MN, and Andrews would both challenge Klaassen for the lead but at the end it was Shane Klaassen taking the win.  He was followed by Jason Andrews, Dan Strandberg, Chad Krug, Mallard IA, and John Briggs, Calumet IA.  Heat race wins went to Chad Krug, Dan Strandberg, and Dustin Larson.

The six lap Hornet feature was won by Roger Nielsen. Nate Coopman, Mankato MN was second followed by Amanda Kaltved, Estherville IA, Jake Schroeder, Lakefield MN, and Brady Schroeder, Lakefield MN.  The heat race was won by Jake Schroeder.

In one the highlighted races of the night, the Faster Pastor race, which featured area church ministers, the 4-lap race was won by Eric Hallstrom of Jackson.  Second went to Christopher Drew of Jackson, followed by Les Mentor of Fairfax MN, Steve Dekok of Jackson MN, Doug Roth of Worthington MN, Dan Taylor of Spencer and Allan Porter of Estherville.

This weekend it’s the biggest race of the season at the Jackson Speedway.  It’s the 31st Annual Jackson Nationals.  All the action starts Thursday with qualifying for the Stock Cars, Hobby Stocks, B Modifieds, and Hornets.  Friday will be the all Sprint show featuring the JSTS Sprints along with the Midwest 305 Sprints and IMCA Sprint cars.  Saturday is championship night with a full program for the JSTS Sprints plus championship races for the 305 sprints, Stock Cars, Hobby Stocks, B Modifieds, and Hornets.  Check jacksonspeedway.com for more details and payouts for this year’s Jackson Nationals.
