Jackson, Minnesota (May 23, 2009) – The Jackson Speedway opened the 2009 points racing season this past Saturday night for Worthington Ag Parts and US Army Race night. Winning the nights feature races were Shawn Van Wyhe, Rock Rapids IA, US Army 360 Sprints; Ryan Voss, Okoboji IA, Napa of Windom 305 Sprints; Luke Sathoff, Jackson MN, Performance Center IMCA Stock Cars; Jake Simpson, Algona IA, Bohl’s Small Engine B Modifieds; Dustin Larson, Rushmore MN, Loosbrock Digging Services Hobby Stocks; and Nate Coopman, Mankato MN, Yellow Book Hornets.
Two different drivers led in the 20-lap 360 Sprint Car feature race. At the start it was Curt Lund, Redwood Falls MN, getting the early lead from his outside row one starting position. Jerry Richert, Jr., Forest Lake MN, grabbed the second spot with Bill Boles, Harris IA, the third spot. The leaders would race in that order for the first five laps of the event when the red flag came out for Nate Eakin, Milford IA, who got upside down in turns one and two. Eakin was ok, but done for the night. Under the red flag, Richert, who was running second, went to the work area which put him to the back of the field for the restart. On the restart, Lund held the field off and would begin to pull away from the field. Boles would run in the second spot with Casey Heser, Jackson MN, in third. On lap ten, Shawn Van Wyhe would work his way up through the field and get by Heser for the third spot. On the fourteenth lap the yellow flag came out for Robby Wolfgang, Sioux Falls SD, who spun in turn two. Lund would hold off the field for one lap on the restart, but Van Wyhe would make his way into the lead in turns three and four as the field worked on lap 16. Van Wyhe led the remaining four laps and went on to take the win. He was followed by Curt Lund, Jody Rosenboom, Rock Rapids IA, Bill Boles, Harris IA, and Mark Toews, Spirit Lake IA. Heat races were won by Curt Lund and Chad Meyer, Sioux Falls SD.
The 305 Sprint Car feature race saw two different drivers lead the 15-lap event. At the start, it was Curt Thurmer, Jackson MN, getting the lead from his pole starting position. Jeff Edgington, Sioux Falls SD, grabbed the second spot with Ryan Voss the third position. On lap three the caution came out when Brad Anderson, Marathon IA, made contact with the wall in turns three and four. On the restart, Thurmer held off the field, but Edgington and Voss were right on his rear. The event would be stopped on lap six when Steve Yarns, Jackson MN, and Jake Nicosen, Ringsted IA, made contact in turn four, Yarns would get upside down. In an effort to avoid the mishap, Dan Jorgenson, Ringsted IA, and Brad Anderson, also made contact and Anderson would get upside down. All the drivers would walk away unharmed but done for the night. On the restart, Thurmer would again hold off the field, but Ryan Voss would get around Edgington for second. As the race began to wind down, Voss would get around Thurmer and take the lead as they raced down the back straightaway and into turn three. Ryan Voss would lead the remaining two laps and go on to take the win. He was followed by Curt Thurmer, Bruce Anderson, Trimont MN, Frank Phipps, Everly IA, and Jeff Edgington. Heat race wins went to Russell Wiese, Lake Park IA, and Bruce Anderson.
The 20-lap IMCA Stock Car feature race saw Luke Sathoff lead from start to finish but it wasn’t easy. At the start, Sathoff would get the lead from his inside pole starting spot. Jeff McCallum, Mankato MN, would get the second position with Mike Jergens, Mallard IA, the third spot. On lap four Elijah Zevenbergen, Ocheydan IA, spun in turn two. On the restart, Sathoff would hold off the field with McCallum maintaining second. Jergens however would lose the third spot to Trent Schroeder, Worthington MN. The battle for the second spot would heat up as McCallum and Schroeder would battle for the second spot for several laps. On lap eleven Schroeder would get by McCallum for second, and a lap later Jergens would get by McCallum. On lap fifteen the caution came out when Ken Tietz, Belle Plaine MN, went up in smoke on the back straightaway. On the restart, the battle for second remained hot between Jergens and Schroeder. On lap 18, several of the leaders came together including Schroeder. On the restart, Luke Sathoff held off the field and went on to take the win. Mike Jergens was second, followed by Jeffrey Larson, Rushmore MN, Jeff McCallum, and Brice Bodle, Wallingford IA. Jeffrey Larson, Luke Sathoff, and Brice Bodle took the heat race wins.
Two different drivers led in the 12-lap B Modifieds. From his pole starting spot Greg Sidles, Emmetsburg IA, got the early lead as Mel Halverson, Jackson MN, grabbed the second spot and Jake Simpson, Algona IA, the third spot. At the end of lap one Adam Onken, Lakefield MN, and Joe Anderson, Trimont MN, got together in turn three bringing out the races only caution flag.
