Friedrichsen, Swindell Claim Spring Sprint Nationals Titles

JACKSON, MN -  It was just like old home week for the Big Game Tree Stands crew Friday night as Sammy Swindell brought the #24 sprinter under the checkers for the championship of the Third Annual Jackson Speedway Spring Sprint Nationals. Swindell survived a green-white-checkered finish challenge from Shane Stewart to earn the $5,000 winners check and shower of champagne in Victory Lane.

Swindell bested a field of 30 contenders for the Jackson Speedway Touring Series home opener Friday night, while Jackson regular Casey Friedrichsen captured the 305 Sprint checkers in the feature event.

“It means a lot to be able to win here at Jackson Speedway,” Swindell, a three-time champion of the World of Outlaws said in Victory Lane. “With the home base of the Big Game Tree Stands team just up the road in Windom, this is like the home track.”

For Swindell, the victory at the Spring Sprint Nationals was a return to the historic Jackson half-mile after racing in the May 1 stop by the World of Outlaws. After starting on the outside pole in the second heat, Swindell won the eight lap heat race, and ended up drawing the third starting position for a qualifying Dash in a draw of Frisbees during intermission.

Swindell would win the dash to earn the pole position for the start of the 25 lap “A” feature, but outside pole sitter Shane Stewart of Bixby, OK, won the drag race down the front straight for the early lead. Swindell would battle back and passed Stewart down the front straight midway through the race. The race would resume, but was red-flagged for a fuel stop with 11 laps to go.

The 24 Big Game Tree Stands car would stay at the front of the field to collect the double checkers at the end of the evening. Shane Stewart would cross the finish line in second, with Brian Brown of Higginsville, MO, finishing third to round out the podium.

Brooke Tatnell, who started dead last in the second B Feature worked his way all the way up to fourth position. Brook passed 9 Cars in the B and 18 Cars in the A to Earn the Bens Bargain Barn Hard Charger Award.

A pair of “B” features were run to determine the final eight starting positions for the JSTS Feature. Jody Rosenboom of Rock Rapids, IA, took the first “B” feature victory, followed by th 25 of Dylan Peterson of Hartford, SD, the 1W of Jerry Richert, JR, of Forest Lake, MN and the 4J of Lee Grosz of Harwood, ND. Winning the second “B” feature was the 5T of Mark Toews of Spirit Lake, IA, followed by the 21K of Lou Kennedy, Jr., of Winnepeg, Manitoba, Canada; the 14 of Brooke Tatnell of Forest Lake, MN and the 11x of Gregg Baker of Sioux Falls, SD.

Jack Dover of Springfield, NE flipped hard to bring out a red flag in the dash, but escaped injury.

Casey Friedrichsen earned the win in the #20 sprinter after working his way to the front of the 12-car “A” feature after starting in seventh position. Friedrichsen worked his way through traffic to record the checkers after finishing fourth in his heat race. Second place honors would go to the 3d car if Ryan Voss of Okoboji and third to Tommy Barber in the 75 car from Sioux Falls, SD.
