By: Tom Svoboda/Jackson Speedway

Jackson Minnesota (June 21, 2008) – The Jackson Speedway hosted its longest running annual event this past Saturday night, the 31st Annual University of Okoboji Race Night sponsored by Forbes Meats of Spirit Lake IA and KICD radio of Spencer IA.  The night featured extra money in the purse plus twin features for the Andy’s Tree Service 360 Sprints.  Picking up the nights feature race wins were Clint Garner, Sioux Falls SD and Gregg Bakker, Sioux Falls SD 360 Sprints; Mike Blomstrom, Ft. Dodge IA, Double Barrel Sprints; Roger Tripp, Marathon IA, Performance Center IMCA Stock Cars; Dustin Phillip, Fairmont MN, B Modifieds; and Dan Strandberg, Worthington MN, Yellow Book Hobby Stocks.

Three different drivers led in the first 20-lap Andy’s Tree Service 360 Sprint Car feature.  At the start it was Johnn Cressman, Hartford SD, getting the early lead from his pole starting position.  Scott Winters, Butterfield MN, would get the second spot with Brett Geldner, St. Peter MN, getting the third spot.  The leaders raced in this order for the first two laps when the races first caution came out for Brandon Geldner, St. Peter MN, who spun in turn two.  One more lap would get in when the red flag was thrown for Lee Grosz, Harwood ND, who got upside down coming out of turn four on the front straightaway.  Grosz was ok and on the restart Cressman would keep the field behind him.  Cressman would start to pull away from the field as Winters ran second and Clint Garner raced in third.  The leaders raced in that order through the eleventh lap when Winters was able to catch Cressman and get by him for the lead coming out of turn two.  The next two laps Garner would be all over Cressman as they raced hard for the second spot.  On lap fourteen the red came out again when Mitch Runge, Sioux Falls SD, got upside down come out of turn four and ended up collecting Johnn Cressman.  Both drivers were ok.  On the restart Garner was able to get by Winters for the lead putting him back to second.  As the field took the white flag Winters would lose another spot as Gregg Bakker moved into second.  When the checkered flag flew it was Clint Garner taking the win followed by Gregg Bakker, Scott Winters, Wade Nygaard, Fargo ND, and Brett Geldner, St. Peter MN.

The second feature race saw the top twelve finishers inverted from the finishing order of the first feature with the rest of the field lined straight up from the first feature and B Feature.  The second feature race took three attempts to get started but once it did it was Gordy Vogelaar, Worthington MN, getting early lead with Jody Rosenboom, Rock Rapids IA, getting the second spot and Curt Lund, Redwood Falls MN, the third spot.  On lap two Bill Boles, Harris IA, got by Lund for third as Vogelaar and Rosenboom remained out front.  On lap five the caution came out when Brett Bartels, Blue Earth MN, spun in turn two.  The restart saw Vogelaar maintain the lead as Rosenboom raced second and Boles third.  Two more caution flags would be thrown on laps eight and ten, each time though, Vogelaar kept the field behind him.  As the field was working on lap fourteen Vogelaar would slow in turns three and four, resulting in a caution flag, and then end up pulling into the pits with a fuel pick up problem.  That gave the lead to Rosenboom who was credited with leading lap fourteen.  On the restart Bakker would go low into turn one and get by Rosenboom for the lead.  Gregg Bakker would then pull away from the field and go on to pick up the win in the second feature race of the night.  Bill Boles, Harris IA would get by Rosenboom as well on the restart and take second.  Jody Rosenboom had to settle for third while Wade Nygaard took fourth and Scott Winters finished fifth.  The B features were won by Jody Rosenboom and Shawn Van Wyhe with the heat races going to Brett Geldner, St. Peter MN, Clint Garner, Brandon Geldner, and Johnn Cressman.

The 15-lap Double Barrel Sprint feature went green-white-checkered and saw two different drivers lead.  At the start it was Bruce Anderson, Trimont MN, getting the early lead with Mark Hodgins, Spencer IA, the second spot and Mike Blomstrom the third spot.  On lap two Blomstrom would challenge Hodgins for second and on the next lap was able to get by him.  As the race went on Anderson raced in first with Blomstrom second and Hodgins third.  On the ninth lap Blomstrom reeled in Anderson and started to challenge him for the lead, while Frank Phipps, Everly IA challenged Hodgins for third.  On the next lap Phipps was able to get by Hodgins for third but Blomstrom needed a few more laps to work on Anderson for the lead.  As the field worked on the fourteenth lap Blomstrom was able to get by Anderson and take the lead, and as the field worked on their final lap Phipps got by Anderson for second.  When the checkered flag flew it was Mike Blomstrom taking the win followed by Frank Phipps, Bruce Anderson, Mark Hodgins, and Steve Yarns, Jackson MN.  Frank Phipps took the heat race win.

The 15-lap Performance Center IMCA Stock Car feature took a bit longer that normal due a fuse blowing that powers the track lights in turns three and four, but once that was fixed it was back to racing.  At the start of the race it was Justin Luinenberg, Reading MN, getting the early lead from his outside row one starting spot.  The caution flag would soon follow as Gary Bannister, Lakefield MN, came to a stop on the back straightaway.  On the restart Luinenberg kept the field behind him as Roger Tripp and Luke Saathoff, Jackson MN, battled it out for second.  On lap three Jeff Senne, Fairmont MN, and Bannister got together in turn four.  As the field was given the one to go sign the track lights in turns three and four went out. Once a new fuse was put it, the lights cooled and back on, it was Luinenberg doing his best to hold off Tripp.  However on the fifth lap Tripp made the move into the number one spot coming out of four for the lead, putting Luinenberg back to second.  On the eighth lap Luke Saathoff, Jackson MN, was able to get by Luinenberg as well.  With five laps to go Trent Schroeder, Worthington MN, moved into the third spot and then set his sights on Saathoff.  With two laps to go Schroeder got by Saathoff as Tripp maintained the lead.  When the checkered flag flew it was Roger Tripp picking up the win followed by Trent Schroeder, Luke Saathoff, Justin Luinenberg, and Brice Bodle, Wallingford IA.  Heat races were won by Luke Saathoff and Trent Schroeder.

The 15-lap B Modified feature race was led start finish by Dustin Phillip.  Phillip got the lead from his outside row one starting spot.  Nick Dieter, Brewster MN, would get the second spot with Josh Ruby, Lakota IA the third position.  Several early race cautions would bunch up the field but each time Phillip would hold them off.  On the fourth lap Ken Odegaard, Welcome MN, moved into the third spot getting by Ruby.  As the race continued on Phillip maintained the lead with Dieter in second and Odegaard in third.  When the checkered flag flew it was Dustin Phillip taking the win followed by Nick Deiter, Ken Odegaard, Josh Ruby, and Danny Myrvold, Heron Lake MN.  Heat races were won by Ken Odegaard, Nick Dieter, and Ben Ruby, Lakota IA.

Two different drivers led in the 12-lap Yellow Book Hobby Stock feature race which saw three caution flags. At the start it was pole sitter Ken Hedden, Spencer IA losing a tire which Ernie Daily, Worthington MN, ended driving over top of it, and it also bunched up the field in turn one.  On the complete restart Drew Barglof, Sioux Rapids IA was able to get the lead with John Briggs, Calumet IA, the second spot, and Dan Strandberg, the third position.  As the field worked on lap two Strandberg was able to get by Briggs and Barglof and take the lead.  On lap three the caution came out when Chris Harris, Graettinger IA, spun in turn four.  Strandberg would hold off the field on the restart, but John Briggs was able to get by Drew Barglof for second.  Two laps later, Adam Ecker, Comfrey MN, moved by Barglof for the third spot.  The races last caution came on the tenth lap, again for Chris Harris, who was sent to the pits for bringing out a second caution.  Dan Strandberg would then keep the field behind him on the restart and go on to take the win.  John Briggs was second followed by Adam Ecker, Drew Barglof, and Ernie Daily.  Heat races were won by Bill Woodcock and Dan Strandberg.
