Alley, Eakin, Mickelson, Bents, and Larson Win Jackson Nationals Championships
By: Tom Svoboda/Jackson Speedway

Jackson Minnesota (August 16, 2008) – On a very pleasant evening a total of 113 cars checked in for the final night of the 30th Annual Kemna-Asa Auto Plaza Jackson Nationals presented by Erickson Trucks-N-Parts of Jackson.  Winning the 2008 Jackson Nationals championships were Billy Alley, Lincoln NE, Jackson Speedway Touring Series 360 Sprints; Nate Eakin, Milford IA, Double Barrel Sprints; Jason Mickelson, Storm Lake IA, Performance Center Stock Cars; Steve Bents, Rushmore MN, B Modifieds; and Dustin Larson, Rushmore MN, Yellow Book Hobby Stocks.

Two different drivers led in the 25-lap JSTS $5,000 to win event.  At the start it was Brian Brown, Higginsville MO, getting the early lead from his inside row one starting spot.  The lead would not last long though as Billy Alley made his move into the lead coming out of turn four on lap two.  That put Brown back to the second spot as Wayne Johnson, Knoxville IA, ran third and Gregg Bakker, Sioux Falls SD, fourth.  Two laps later Johnson got by Brown, and on lap six Brown slipped back to fourth as Bakker got by him as well.  The races first caution flag came out on lap seven when Clint Garner, Sioux Falls SD, came to a stop off of turn one.  On the restart, Alley kept the field behind him as Johnson raced in second and Bakker third.  The leaders raced in this order for the next several laps.  On lap seventeen Brown would work his way around Bakker for the third position. With six laps to go the caution came out when Bill Boles, Harris IA, had a motor let go.  On the restart, Alley kept the field behind him, but Johnson was not able to keep Brown in third, as he moved around him for second.  That caution flag was the last thing that slowed Billy Alley, as he led the remaining laps and went on to claim his first ever Jackson Nationals Championship.  Brian Brown finished second followed by Wayne Johnson, Gregg Bakker, and Johnn Cressman, Hartford SD.  The pole dash went to Brian Brown, with Jeff Mitrisin, Oskloosa IA, winning the B Feature.  Heat races were won by Brad Barickman, Richfield MN, Brian Brown, and Jordan Martens, Harrisburg SD.

It was all Nate Eakin in the 15-lap $500 to win Double Barrel Sprint feature.  At the start it was Eakin getting the early lead from his pole starting position.  Frank Phipps, Everly IA, would grab the second spot with Devin Friedrichsen, Arthur IA, getting the third spot.  On lap two Bruce Anderson, Trimont MN, got by Friedrichsen for third.  The race would run caution free, as Eakin maintained his number one spot, with Phipps in second and Anderson in third.  As the race began to wind down, Phipps and Anderson would swap positions on the white flag lap.  When the checkered flag flew it was Nate Eakin picking up his first ever Nationals Win.  He was followed by Bruce Anderson, Frank Phipps, Devin Friedrichsen, and Casey Friedrichsen, Arthur IA. Heat races were won by Nate Eakin and Frank Phipps.

The 20-lap $1,500 to win Stock Car feature race saw two different leaders.  At the start it was Jerry Coopman, Mankato MN, getting the early lead.  Jason Mickelson would get the second spot with Jeff Senne, Fairmont MN, getting the third position.  On lap two, fourth place running Stefan Sybesma, Sanborn IA, got by Senne and Mickelson to move into second.  The leaders would now put many laps in the books as Coopman raced up front followed by Sybesma and Mickelson.  The hottest battle on the track was for fourth on back as several cars were jockeying back and forth for those positions.  On lap thirteen the caution came out for Jared Anderson, Sherburn MN, who spun in turn one.  Jerry Coopman would keep the field behind him, but on the next lap Coopman would lose his right front tire in turns one and two, which got him sideways, and Sybesma had no place to go and ran into Coopman.  When the wreckage was cleared that handed the restart lead over to Jason Mickelson, as Jake Maters, Graettinger IA, raced in second and Jeff Joldersma, McCellen IA, ran third.  While working on lap seventeen Masters would spin in turns one and two, but the race remained under green.  Masters didn’t agree with that call, as he got out of his car and tried to take the corner flagman’s yellow flag to display caution flag to the field. As the race continued on, Ken Tietz, Belle Plaine MN, would challenge Joldersma for second.  When the checkered flag flew it was Jason Mickelson picking up the win followed by Ken Tietz, Jeff Joldersma, Brice Bodle, Wallingford IA, and Justin Luinenberg, Reading MN.

The 15-lap $1,000 to win B Modified feature race was a hotly contested event.  At the start it was Josh Ruby, Lakota IA, getting the early lead.  Kyle Steuber, Fairmont MN, would get the second spot with Ken Odegaard, Welcome MN, the third spot.  On lap three Ruby and Dan Ahlers, Slayton MN, would both spin in turn one. That handed the restart lead over to Ken Odegaard.  On the next lap, Dan Paplow, Dundee MN, would spin in three and four, and about half the field would also spin trying to avoid him.  All but two cars were able to restart.  Two more laps would get in with Odegaard up front, when two more yellows were thrown.  Odegaard kept the field behind on the restart, but Steve Bents would start to challenge him for the lead, and the race was on for the number one spot.  Odegaard and Bents would put on an awesome show racing side by side and go back and forth with the lead.  They would continue the battle almost to the end of the race, but one more caution came out with a half lap left in the race.  On the restart, Odegaard would again challenge Bents for the lead, but Bents held him off.  When checkered flag flew it was Steve Bents winning.  Jason Fisher, Lakefield MN came from further back in the field and had a great run down the front stretch to just get by Ken Odegaard at the line.  Odegaard had to settle for third, while Jeremy Smith, Luverne MN, was fourth and Josh Ruby worked his way back up to fifth.

The 15-lap $1,000 to win Hobby Stock championship race was led start to finish by Dustin Larson.  Larson would get the lead from his outside row one starting spot.  Guy Kimpton, Wells MN, would get the second spot with Josh Peters, Dickens IA, getting the third spot.  The races first caution came on lap one when several cars got together on the front straightaway.  Once the track was cleared, Larson kept the field behind him, only to be slowed again on lap two when Colton Knudson, Westbrook MN, and Shane Klaassen, Little Rock IA, got together in turn two.  Again Larson would keep everyone behind him on the restart.  As the race went on, Larson would maintain the number one spot with Kimpton in second and Peters in third.  The races last caution came on lap twelve when Randy Hadecek, Burt IA, had a rear end let go and stopped on the back straightaway.  Dustin Larson again held the field off and went on to claim his first Jackson Nationals win.  He was followed by Guy Kimpton, Josh Peters, Rick Heenan, Fairmont MN, and Mitch Van Engen, Doon IA.

The Jackson Speedway will now take a week off as there will be no racing on Saturday, August 23rd.  The next race will be season championship night on August 30th.  For more information on the Jackson Speedway log onto www.jacksonspeedway.com
