Jackson Minnesota (August 30, 2008) – On a near perfect night for racing the Jackson Speedway finished its 2008 points racing campaign under clear skies. Winning the 2008 Track Championships were Gordy Vogelaar, Worthington MN, Andy’s Tree Service 360 Sprints; Frank Phipps, Everly IA, Double Barrel Sprints; Trent Schroeder, Worthington MN, Performance Center IMCA Stock Cars; Justin Schuder, Fairmont MN, B Modifieds; and Dan Strandberg, Worthington MN, Yellow Book Hobby Stocks.
Winning the nights feature races on Pizza Ranch of Jackson and Poppe’s 66 of Fairmont race night were Wade Nygaard, Fargo ND, 360 Sprints; Frank Phipps, Double Barrel Sprints; Jim Larson, Rushmore MN, IMCA Stock Cars; Jason Fisher, Lakefield MN, B Modifieds; and Dan Thate, Fairmont MN, Hobby Stocks.
The 20-lap Sprint Car feature race would decide the track championship for the 360 Sprints, as only two points separated point leader Bill Boles, Harris IA, and Gordy Vogelaar. The line-up saw Vogelaar on the pole with Boles lining up in the 10th spot. The race would see two different leaders and the caution flag displayed twice. At the start it was Jody Rosenboom, Rock Rapids IA, getting the early lead from his outside row one starting spot. Gordy Vogelaar would grab the second spot with Wade Nygaard the third position. On lap three Nygaard would get by Vogelaar for the second spot, and on the next lap Nygaard was able to get around Rosenboom and take the lead. On lap four the caution came out when Russell Wiese, Lake Park IA, came to a stop in turn two. Wiese would need a tow to the pits and on the restart Nygaard would hold the field off as Rosenboom ran in second and Vogelaar third. Three laps later the races last caution came out when Shawn Van Wyhe, Rock Rapids IA, spun in turn two. Once again on the restart Nygaard kept the field behind him as Rosenboom raced in second and Vogelaar in third. By the half way point in the race, point leader Bill Boles was up to the sixth position and trying to work his way forward. The leaders would not change positions through the last half of the race and when the checkered flag flew it was Wade Nygaard picking up his fifth feature win of the season at the Jackson Speedway. Jody Rosenboom would take second followed by Gordy Vogelaar, Mark Toews, Spirit Lake IA, and Bill Boles. When the points shook themselves out it was Gordy Vogelaar winning by three points over Boles giving him his sixth track championship. Heat race wins went to Mark Toews and Shawn Van Wyhe.
The 15-lap Double Barrel Sprint Car feature went green-white-checkered and was lead start to finish by Frank Phipps. At the start of the race it was Phipps getting a good run through turns three and four on the opening lap as he got the lead coming out of turn four after starting the race in row two. Pole sitter Nate Eakin would get the second spot with Brad Anderson, Marathon IA, the third spot. On lap two Bruce Anderson, Trimont MN, would get by Brad Anderson for the third spot. Phipps would continue to pull away from the field as Eakin raced in second and Bruce Anderson third. When the checkered flag flew Frank Phipps was about to lap fifth place as he took the win. Nate Eakin took second followed by Bruce Anderson, Jake Nicosen, Ringsted IA, and Curt Thurmer, Jackson MN. Frank Phipps also won the heat race.
Two different leaders led in the caution filled Stock Car feature. At the start of the race the caution flag was thrown when Al Thoms, Fairmont MN, lost his drive shaft going into turn four and spun his car. On the complete restart it was Justin Luinenberg, Reading MN, getting the early lead. Trent Schroeder, Worthington MN, would grab the second spot with Jim Larson the third spot. Two early race cautions kept leaders, Luinenberg, Schroeder and Larson in a tight pack. On lap three Schroeder would retire from the race, moving Larson into second. For the next several laps Larson would ride on Luinenbergs tail as Klaus Deuschle, Reading raced in third. On lap six the caution came out when Derek Voehl, Lakefield MN, spun in turn four. Again on the restart Luinenberg kept the field behind him as Larson raced in second and Brice Bodle, Wallingford IA, in third. Several more laps would get in when the battle for the lead really heated up late in the race, as Larson would challenge Luinenberg down the front straightaway, and at the line Larson would lead the lap by inches. Larson would then get around Luinenberg as they raced into turn one. Luinenberg would not give up though as he raced side by side with him for the lead on the white flag lap. When the checkered flag flew though, it was Jim Larson picking up the win followed by Justin Luinenberg, Brice Bodle, Jeff Senne, Fairmont MN, and Derrick Barglof, Sioux Rapids IA. Heat races went to Brice Bodle and Jeff Senne.
The 12-lap B Modified feature saw a driver cross the finish line first for the first time in his career, only to be disqualified in tech. At the start of the race the caution came out when Jim Kelsey, Montgomery IA, and Adam Onken, Lakefield MN, made contact in turn two causing Onken to spin. On the complete restart it was Dan Paplow, Dundee MN, getting the early lead from his outside row one starting spot. Justin Schuder, Fairmont MN, would get the second spot with Jason Fisher getting the third spot. The leaders raced in this order for the first four laps when Fisher was able to get around Schuder for second. On lap eight the caution came out for debris in turn two. On the restart, Paplow would keep the field behind him as Fisher ran second and Ken Odegaard, Welcome raced in third. The leaders stayed in this order to the end and when the checkered flag flew it was Dan Paplow crossing the line in first. Unfortunately Paplow would not pass post race tech and was disqualified. That gave the win to second place finisher Jason Fisher. He would be followed by Ken Odegaard, Kyle Steuber, Fairmont MN, Josh Ruby, Lakota IA, and Eric Kinnetz, Spirit Lake IA. Heat races went to Kyle Steuber and Ken Odegaard.
Two different drivers led in the 12-lap Hobby Stock Feature race. At the start it was Dan Strandberg, Worthington MN, getting the early lead with Dan Thate, getting the second spot and Jason Andrews, Okabena MN, the third spot. Through two cautions in the first half of the race it was Dan Strandberg keeping the field behind him as Thate ran second and Andrews third. As the race was nearing its end, race leader Dan Strandberg spun in turn one with a flat tire. That brought out the caution and gave the lead to Dan Thate. Thate would be challenged heavily through the last two laps by Andrews, but when the checkered flag flew it was Dan Thate picking up the win by a half a car length over Jason Andrews who had to settle for second. Dustin Larson was third followed by Jim Johnson, Spirit Lake IA, and John Briggs, Calumet IA. Heat races went to Jason Andrews and Dustin Larson.
